Kamala Harris: The Environmental Leader America Needs for a Sustainable Future

As we face climate change, the upcoming election holds immense significance for our environmental future. During his term, former President Donald J. Trump withdrew the United States from the Paris Agreement. He has continuously indicated his intention to reduce America’s involvement in global climate efforts if re-elected. Vice President Kamala Harris, in contrast, understands the threat that climate change poses to the world. She is not afraid to fight against it, protecting us and the future world by thinking ahead and implementing proactive measures.

The current Republican stance includes a promise to repeal the Inflation Reduction Act, a landmark piece of legislation that allocates over $370 billion over ten years to promote renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, batteries, and electric vehicles, aiming to decrease the country’s reliance on fossil fuels and combat global warming. During their recent convention, Republicans pledged to halt the transition away from oil, gas, and coal, favoring increased development of these fossil fuels.

Kamala Harris offers a beacon of hope for those committed to environmental preservation. Harris’s statement at the United Nations global climate summit, where she declared, “the urgency of this moment is clear. The clock is no longer just ticking, it is banging. And we must make up for lost time,” shows her dedication to climate action. Harris’s environmental advocacy dates back to her tenure as California’s Attorney General, where she secured over $50 million in settlements from major oil companies and investigated Exxon Mobil for potentially misleading the public about the impact of fossil fuels on climate change.

As a U.S. senator, Harris co-sponsored the Green New Deal, a resolution aiming to reduce carbon emissions, create jobs, and support communities impacted by climate change. She introduced the Water Justice Act to alleviate water costs for low-income families and improve water systems in schools and communities with contamination issues. The Climate Equity Act, another initiative by Harris, sought to evaluate the impact of environmental laws on disadvantaged communities.

As Vice President, Harris was instrumental in passing the Inflation Reduction Act by casting the decisive Senate vote. This legislation is the most substantial climate investment in U.S. history. Nationally, the Biden administration, with Harris’s support, has implemented the Justice40 Initiative, ensuring that 40 percent of certain climate and clean energy investments benefit disadvantaged communities.

Harris’s influence extends to international advocacy, as evidenced by her powerful speech at the United Nations climate summit. Her choice of Tim Walz, who enacted a law requiring Minnesota’s electricity to come from clean energy sources by 2040 and passed over 40 climate initiatives, further emphasizes her commitment to environmental leadership.

Kamala Harris represents a forward-thinking choice for those who wish to protect our planet and ensure a sustainable future. Voting for Harris means voting for comprehensive climate action, environmental justice, and a robust transition to renewable energy. Let’s ensure that our leadership reflects the urgency of the climate crisis and takes decisive action to safeguard our world for future generations.
